Heatstroke Prevention in Summer Months

Any pet can experience heatstroke, and there are early warning signs of heatstroke all pet owners should be aware of. Prevention is always key in the hot summer months. If your pet happens to experience a heat stroke, you need to get your pet to an animal hospital or contact a mobile vet immediately. Following is more information on preventing heatstroke in the summer months from the veterinary professionals at Liberty Vet Pets.

Ways to Prevent Heatstroke

To help your pet avoid heatstroke in the middle of the summer, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Do not let your dog linger around on surfaces such as cement and asphalt when the temperatures outside are hot. Your pet can heat up rather quickly if its body is close to the ground. Make sure to keep walks on these surfaces to a minimum.
  • Provide your pet with a lightweight haircut for the summer to help prevent overheating. However, never cut your pet’s hair to the point where skin is exposed.
  • Hydration is key. Provide fresh water at all times to your pet and make sure that when your dog is outside that they have access to shade and cool water.
  • When temperatures begin to rise, consider limiting your pet’s exercise. Avoid muzzling your dog since it can take away its ability to pant.
  • Most dogs and other pets enjoy splashing and being in the water. Allow them to run through a sprinkler or a wading pool when the temperatures soar.
  • Never leave your pet in a parked car. This is true even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes. The temperature inside a car can reach oven temperatures within minutes.
